So after the stroller was all together, Nick and I worked on his homework a little and we of course started talking about babies...a bit inevitable when you're expecting. He made a comment about how when babies are born, they have their fists clenched, and it made me think of a book that I'm reading:
"When a baby comes into the world, its hands are clenched, right? Like this?"
He made a fist.
"Why? Because a baby, not knowing any better, wants to grab everything, to say, 'The whole world is mine.'"
"But when an old person dies, how does he do so? With his hands open. Why? Because he has learned the lesson."
What lesson? I asked.
He stretched open his empty fingers.
"We can take nothing with us."
I thought this was a pretty cool explanation, although I'm not entirely sure of its truth.
Life...and death, are two things I have not come to fully understand. But I guess I've only had 21 years to think about it ;)
